Portales man accused in cockfighting investigation

A Portales man is accused of running a cockfighting ring north of Levelland, Texas, after a multi-departmental investigation over several weeks.

A property on the 100 block of America Road in Levelland was searched Friday by Hockley County-area law officers, according to a press release from the Hockley County Sheriff’s office.

“When officers arrived at the location, the alleged illegal activities were ongoing,” the release said.

Hockley County Sheriff Ray Scifres said law officers were tipped off in mid-July and immediately began an investigation leading up to the raid. Scifres said he does not know how long the ring has been active.

Forty-five people were detained during the search, officials said, though only two were arrested and charged with felonies in connection with cockfighting: Kenny Grubbs of Portales and a Levelland man, Eulogio Guerro Jr.

Thirty-seven citations were issued, one misdemeanor arrest occurred and five people were detained by immigration additionally.

The press release said the initial tip said there was gambling involved, but Scifres declined to provide additional information.

The sheriff said Guerro and Grubbs bonded out of Hockley County’s jail on Saturday for $2,500 each.

Attempts to contact Grubbs were not immediately successful.
