Employee with gun started trip from Clovis

CLOVIS — The city employee arrested with a gun in a Dallas airport last month began his trip from Clovis Municipal Airport, city officials said on Thursday.

The city’s information technology director, Paul Nelson, was arrested June 11 for carrying a gun in a secure part of Dallas Love Field Airport while traveling to Washington, D.C., on a city-financed trip, records show.

It was not immediately clear if Nelson could have carried a gun on the flight out of Clovis.

Nelson has declined to discuss the issue.

City Finance Director LeighAnn Melancon confirmed on Thursday that Nelson flew to Dallas from Clovis on June 10 on Boutique Air with a ticket purchased by the city. She said Nelson stayed the night in Dallas and then traveled to Love Field.

Phelps declined to say more on what he has termed a “personnel issue.”

A representative of Boutique Air declined immediate comment Thursday afternoon but referred questions to the aviation company’s headquarters in San Francisco.

Clovis city commissioners on Thursday evening held their second executive session in seven days related to what they’ve termed “limited personnel.”

Officials have declined to say whether the Nelson issue is the topic of their closed-door meetings.

They took no action after one hour and forty-five minutes in executive session on Thursday.
