Suspect arrested in 2015 fatal crash

PORTALES — A man suspected of fleeing from a fatal one-vehicle crash in Portales two years ago has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide.

Records show Jose Angel Calderon, 28, was booked in the Roosevelt County Detention Center on Thursday night and charged with homicide by vehicle, great bodily injury by vehicle (DWI), and leaving the scene of an accident, among other charges.

A state police spokesman said Calderon was arrested in El Paso and extradited to Portales, but details were not immediately available.

Police said Angel Garcia, 20, of Clovis, was killed in the crash, which happened about 2 a.m. on June 7, 2015, near N.M. 267 and North Industrial Drive in Portales.

Another passenger, Arturo Curiel-Loya of Clovis, suffered head injuries and was treated at Roosevelt County General Hospital.

“The initial investigation revealed a 1999 Ford pickup was traveling southbound on South Roosevelt Road,” police said at the time.

“The vehicle crossed the intersection of N.M. 267 and continued south on North Industrial Drive. The vehicle then exited the roadway and collided into a tree. Witnesses observed the driver of the vehicle flee on foot from the scene.”

A warrant was issued for Calderon’s arrest soon after the incident.
