Child hurt by gunfire in home

CLOVIS — A 6-year-old girl injured by gunfire in her home on Sunday night was most likely the victim of carelessness, Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller said Monday.

The child, who lives in the 1300 block of Grove Street off of State Highway 467 south of Clovis, was treated and released from the Clovis hospital.

She suffered mouth and facial injuries from debris after a bullet went through an exterior wall of her residence, Waller said.

“It was probably someone shooting for whatever reason — target practice, or we’re not sure of the purpose — but I don’t think that house was a target,” Waller said.

Waller said the child’s parents and a sibling were also in the home at the time of the shooting.

A county news release said witnesses saw a white sedan leaving the scene after the shots were fired.

According to the news release:

• Deputies responded to the shooting at 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

• “It was determined that a 6-year-old child was injured by debris after a bullet penetrated an exterior wall of her residence. The projectile struck a ceramic wallhanging, causing it to fragment. The child received mouth and facial injuries as a result of shrapnel from the shattered ornament.”

• “Evidence indicates the bullet was fired from the area of 1363 Rose Street, which is an unoccupied residence.”

• Anyone with information is asked to contact the Curry County Sheriff’s Office at 575-769-2335, or they can remain anonymous and be considered for a reward of up to $1,000 by contacting Curry County Crime Stoppers at 575-763-7000.
