ENMU's Barry wins goat tying title at CNFR

CASPER, Wyo. — Senior Tawny Barry captured first place on Saturday in goat tying competition at the College National Finals Rodeo, leading Eastern New Mexico University’s women to a third-place team showing in the weeklong event.

Barry, from Carter, South Dakota, was fifth entering Saturday’s short go, but posted a time of 6.6 seconds to rally for the championship. She is the first ENMU champion at the CNFR since 2014, when Hayden Segelke for the women (goat tying) and Logan Medlin for the men (team roping) turned the trick.

ENMU had four competitors in the women’s portion of the rodeo, three of them in goat tying. Junior Celie Vick of Byers, Colorado placed seventh in goat tying, with a time of 7.7 seconds in Saturday’s short go.

The Greyhounds finished with 345 points in the event, trailing runnerup Wyoming by five points and finishing third for the third time in the last four years. Sam Houston State took team honors.

Also competing for the Hounds were seniors Lindsey Adcock in goat tying and Tierra Gray in breakaway roping. Gray managed to split third and fourth place in the second round of the event.

Coach Albert Flinn said Barry and Gray are slated to return to next year’s team as grad students. Despite the small number of qualifiers, he thought the Hounds had a chance to win the team title if things had gone their way.

“They had a good week,” he said of the quartet. “With the girls I took, I thought we had a shot at being first (as a team).”
