Fire guts cabinet-making business

PORTALES — A structure fire claimed a cabinet-making business south of Portales on Friday night, according to Portales Fire Chief Gary Nuckols.

Nuckols said firefighters were called to South Roosevelt Road 6 1/2 and New Mexico 206 at 9:30 p.m. Friday for the fire.

“It was a loss, about half of the building burned,” Nuckols said, adding that no one was hurt.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Nuckols also said there were some small lightning fires on Monday in the county, but the rural fire departments handled them quickly.

Clovis Fire Chief Michael Nolen said he was not aware of any lightning fires in Curry County on Monday.

“It appears that the storm went down to the south of us to Chief Nuckols’ district,” he said.
