Ruck march commemorates 10 years of mission

CLOVIS - The men and women of Cannon Air Force Base are going 10 miles to mark 10 years.

Final touches are being applied to Saturday's Ruck March, which begins 7 a.m. Saturday at the Curry County Courthouse and ends with a celebration about two-and-a-half hours later at Cannon's Unity Park.

The event, which doubles as a charitable effort for the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico, is a 10-mile march that will move along Seventh Street on the right lane and cover three miles inside the base.

It is one of many events over the next few months helping celebrate the 10th anniversary of the 27th Air Force Special Operations Wing at Cannon.

There will be 20 teams of 10, with each person carrying a backpack that includes at least 10 percent of their body weight in nonperishable food for donation.

Sr. Master Sgt. Rob Moore, one of the base's organizers for the event, said that even on a low estimate of all participants weighing 150 pounds, the donated food should be at least 3,000 pounds.

Following a short address by 27th SOW Commander Col. Benjamin Maitre, the teams will be individually timed with staggered starts, and the team that covers the course in the least time wins.

"We're looking to have everyone off the start line in about 20 minutes," Moore said.

There will also be a 10K for personnel who want to participate without carrying the weight.

Members of the public are encouraged to line the streets in support.

Estimates early in the week put participation at 350, but Cannon's public affairs office notes enrollment is open throughout the week.

Various local businesses plan to have water and bathroom stops along the route, and Moore said the base will provide them every few miles once the path passes Veterans Park.

Several local events will incorporate the anniversary, including the "Cowboys and Camo" themed Pioneer Days June 1-3, a military barbecue as part of the June 24 Draggin' Main events, the July 4 Smoke on the Water fireworks display and the Aug. 11 Cannon Appreciation Day.
