Organizers prepped for Relay main event

CLOVIS — The dog days are over, but organizers are ready for the main Relay for Life event on June 10.

The Clovis Bark for Life brought in $2,800 Saturday for the committee to put toward the relay.

"It was really, really nice having all those people, we're super happy. It was a pretty good turnout — I didn't realize we were competing with (Eastern New Mexico University) graduation," said Sherrie Nymeyer, the Bark for Life Chair.

"Bark for Life is always a big crowd pleaser," said Sharon Franco, this year's Relay for Life chair.

Organizers are still aiming to gather more teams and participants for the relay benefiting the American Cancer Society.

"We have about 250 (individuals; 30 teams) who have signed up online," said Franco.

The event will include a 5K run to start off the day, with the main event going 10 a.m.-10 p.m.

Nymeyer also said the committee members are welcoming organizations to host various booths during the relay.

Any new participants who would like to register may do so online or by attending a captain's meeting Tuesday nights at 6:30 p.m. at the Clovis-Carver Library. The final Tuesday captain's meeting on June 6 will be for registered teams to pick up their event T-shirts.

According to Franco, this is the first year the relay has been in June instead of May.

"We hope the weather is going to cooperate with us," she said.
