Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities

Weather puts damper on area sports events

Weather a bit on the wintry side made a late, albeit apparently brief, showing on Saturday and forced the postponement of a majority of events.

Most have been rescheduled, however.

Clovis High had District 2-6A baseball and softball home doubleheaders against La Cueva washed away. Those were to have wrapped up regular-season play.

CHS athletic director Dale Fullerton said on Saturday that the Wildcats’ baseball games against the Bears have been rescheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Bell Park, while the softball twin bill is now set to start at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Lady Wildcat Field.

Meantime, the District 2-6A tennis tournament, slated for Friday and Saturday, has now been turned into an all-day event on Monday in Albuquerque. Play is scheduled to begin on Monday at 8 a.m.

Portales and Texico were scheduled to wrap up the regular season in baseball on Saturday at Portales. That game has been moved to 4:30 p.m. Monday, followed by a junior varsity contest.

PHS athletic director Mark Gallegos announced on Friday that a District 4-4A twin bill between Moriarty and the Lady Rams, originally slated for 11 a.m. on Saturday, will now be played at 4 p.m. Thursday at Wheeler Park. That will also wrap up both teams’ regular seasons.

PHS had completed team play in District 4/1-4A tennis on Friday at New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell, with individual singles and doubles play washed out on Saturday. The state tournament is scheduled from Wednesday through Saturday in Albuquerque, with individual singles and doubles playing the first two days and team competition on the latter two.

Portales finished fourth in team play. The boys defeated Moriarty 5-2, then lost to NMMI and Hope Christian by identical 5-1 scores while the girls blanked Silver 6-0 and lost to Mesilla Valley and Hope by 5-2 counts in the next two rounds.

District coaches met on Saturday morning to seed players and determine who would go to state, with the top four in singles and doubles from each district earning berths.

Lady Rams coach Anne-Marie Bucksath said junior Sarah Blaeser should earn one of the four singles spots for the girls, probably second, and she thinks her squad will get an at-large bid to team competition as well.

Meantime, Rams senior Zach Laurenz will face NMMI’s Francisco Saracho in a match to determine the district’s fourth seed to state in singles. That contest is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Monday at the Bill Wahlman Tennis Center.

Rams coach Logan Brown said his team could get into the team competition as an at-large entry, but he doesn’t think it’s that likely.

The district 5-3A track meet, involving Texico, was postponed on Saturday and has been rescheduled for 2 p.m. on Monday.

Also, Eastern New Mexico’s season-ending Lone Star Conference softball game against West Texas A&M was moved from Saturday to 2 p.m. on Sunday at Greyhound Softball Field.
