Portales first baseman Alex Galvan takes care of a grounder by Eunice's Hayden Dean himself during the third inning of Monday's opener at Ram Field. The Rams improved to 19-6 for the season with an 8-1, 10-0 sweep of the Cardinals.

PORTALES — The Portales High baseball team got the final week of its regular season off to a fast start on Monday.

PHS cruised to 8-1 and 10-0 victories over Eunice at Ram Field, setting up a battle with Texico (19-3) in Saturday's 11 a.m. regular-season finale, also at home.

The Rams (19-6), who finished District 4-4A play last weekend with a three-game sweep at New Mexico Military, got complete-game pitching efforts from senior Darion Ontiveros and junior Josiah Lucero against the Cardinals, normally a contender in Class 3A baseball but struggling this year at 5-17.

Lucero threw a five-inning shutout in Game 2, striking out seven and allowing only two baserunners — a walk to the first hitter he faced and a fourth-inning single by losing pitcher Cristian Larrea.

Ontiveros gave up three hits and only a sixth-inning unearned run, also walking one and striking out seven.

"Our guys threw really well at NMMI, so we had some guys who could step up for us," Rams coach Dusty Nusser said of Monday's wins. "And we played really good defense tonight."

PHS managed just four hits in the opener — three by Ontiveros, who had a solo home run and a two-run single.

In the nightcap, the Rams carried a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth and finished it on the 10-run rule with a six-spot. Juniors Julian Tellez and Joel Legarda both went 3-for-3 and each drove in a pair of runs.

Portales went 8-4 in 4-4A and currently leads Hope Christian (16-7, 6-3) by one-half game, but the Huskies own a head-to-head tiebreaker and can win the district title by taking two of three at home this weekend against NMMI.
