Cats, Lady Cats top Portales

CLOVIS — Clovis High's boys tennis team lost only two sets on Tuesday in posting a 9-0 victory over Portales in a dual match on Tuesday at the CHS courts.

The Lady Wildcats had a little tougher time, but pulled out a 5-4 victory over the Lady Rams.

The only set lost in singles by the Wildcats came at No. 4 singles, when Portales freshman Zeke Aguirre took a 6-2 win over CHS junior David Heath. But Heath came back to win the final two sets by 6-0 scores.

In doubles, senior Rohan Angadi and junior Tony Betts also had to rally from a set down, posting a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 victory over the Rams' Zach Laurenz and Gerardo Calderon.

On the girls' side, senior Kylee Brooks clinched the dual at No. 1 singles, posting a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 win over Lady Rams junior Sarah Blaeser. Portales took the only other three-setter in the dual, with Vanessa Lucero rallying past the Lady Cats' Ariana Salais 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4 singles.

Portales squads return to action this weekend in the Northern New Mexico Invite at Santa Fe. Meantime, the Cats and Lady Cats are off until April 1, when they open District 4-6A action at home with 1 p.m. duals against Manzano.
