Oklahoma Christian sweeps ENMU softball squad

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian on Tuesday, falling 7-3 and 12-7 at Greyhound Softball Field.

ENMU third baseman Adriana Carabajal went 3-for-7 in the twin bill for the Greyhounds (13-16), with a triple, her first home run of the season and three RBIs.

The games marked the first time ENMU hosted the Lady Eagles throughout their eight-game series history. Oklahoma Christian has won all three meetings this season, and Eastern’s 13 victories remain just one behind last season’s total.

The Lady Eagles’ Sheridan Bond led off the opener with a home run to center, and Kaylie Upton’s three-run shot made it 4-0 later in the inning. Eastern pulled to 7-3 with two runs in the fifth on Erikka Burke’s groundout and a two-out RBI single by Samantha Brockman, but the Hounds left the bases loaded and were unable to get any closer.

Madison Hagood (7-4) worked five innings for Oklahoma Christian, and reliever Madison Nordyke allowed just one baserunner on a walk over the final two innings to close it out.

The nightcap saw Oklahoma Christian erase a 1-0 deficit with consecutive three-run innings in the third and fourth, including Haley Squier’s three-run homer which made it 6-1.

The Hounds once again showed signs of life late. Katie Ripple delivered a pinch-hit homer in the bottom of the fourth, and ENMU batted around in a five-run fifth to take a 7-6 lead.

Carabajal hit a two-run triple in the inning, and right fielder Kamalani Peneku’s RBI double to left brought home the go-ahead run to cap the rally.

The Lady Eagles regained the lead in the sixth, though, when third baseman Bridget White hit an RBI double and Upton delivered a run-scoring single. White, who finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs, added a two-run homer in Oklahoma Christian’s four-run seventh.

Squier finished the contest 3-for-3 with a walk, four runs scored and five RBIs.

ENMU returns to Lone Star Conference play this weekend, hosting No. 17 Angelo State. The teams will play a doubleheader on Friday, starting at noon.
