Retired professor publishes ‘weird’ short story collection

Dragonfly Press has published a group of short stories by Dr. Antony Oldknow, who retired in 2012 from Eastern New Mexico University as an English professor.

The 187-page book is titled “Dr. Upex and the great God Ing: Fifteen Weird Unexpected Stories.”

Story titles include “Dr. Upex and the Great God Ing,” “The Soldier,” “Cathredal Woman, “Ruelle des Martyrs,” “The Man in the Tree,” “The Catch,” “Woman with Red Gloves,” “The Pulley,” and “If You Will Believe This.”

“The stories are very different,” Oldknow said. “Their subject matter ranges from World War II to magic realism to some developed from my poems.”

The 77-year-old emeritus professor has previously published the novels “The Gustave Dore Parody,” “Invasions,” “The Eight Wives of King Henry VI” and “Clara d’Ellebeuse.”

ENMU professor passionate about English

Eastern New Mexico University professor Carol Singletary has taught for over 30 years.  She is the new director in ENMU’s Writing Center. She encourages students to come in any time they need help.

Born in Oregon, Singletary moved up and down the west coast as a child — including Juneau, Alaska; Seattle and several cities in southern California.

Carol and her husband moved to New Mexico after her husband received a job offer because they “both hated southern California so much.” She discovered many history teachers were coaches, so she switched to English.

Since the 80s, she taught English and journalism courses fulltime until about four years ago.
