Prep roundup: Sandia ousts Clovis girls in 2-6A

ALBUQUERQUE — Facing No. 7 Sandia is a little bit of "pick your poison" with senior Cara Liggins and sophomore Sabirah Broussard averaging nearly 30 points a night.

Clovis held Broussard to four points nine days ago, only to see Liggins score 35 in a 67-50 Sandia win.

Wednesday, it was Broussard with 24 and Liggins with 18 as the seventh-ranked Matadors pulled a clean sweep over Clovis with a 65-55 victory in the second round of the District 2-6A tournament.

Sandia (21-5), winners of four straight, takes on Santa Fe on Thursday, with the winner facing La Cueva in the 6-2A title game Saturday.

Clovis, led by Teya Morris' 20 points, now waits for selection Sunday after a game in which they were competitive but could never make a lead last.

"They're just so athletic, and it's hard for us," Clovis coach Jeff Reed said. "They're good in transition, and they're fairly disciplined on offense. They did a good job looking inside and outside. They don't turn the ball over. They always hit the big shot when they had to.

"We're overmatched, in some ways as far as the athleticism is concerned. The girls played hard, played tough, gave us a chance to be in it, but they made a last little run that did us in."

The Matadors jumped out to a 16-6 lead, only to see Clovis (10-18) respond with an 8-0 run to close the first.

Brittni Chavez added 13 for Clovis, which hopes a late-season charge will mean playoffs in what has been an injury-riddled season.

"I still think we have a decent shot," Reed said. "We'll be a 15 or 16 seed, have to play Carlsbad or Hobbs, but I think we have a chance (to make the field)."

Fort Sumner 52, Dora 39 — The host Vixens got all the points they needed from three players to dispatch the Coyotes and earn a 6 p.m. Friday District 6-2A title matchup at Logan.

Jordyn Stowe scored 15, while Claudia Torres added 14 and Abby Wilton 13.

Dora (18-10), led by Daelynn Lee's game-high 17, led 12-4 after the first quarter, but was outscored 35-17 in the second half.

Elida 40, Grady 25 — In District 4-1A, the second-seeded Tigers steadily built a lead and were led by Madi Haley's 12 points.

The six-time defending small-school champs also got 10 from Taylor Epps, and face Melrose in a 6 p.m. Friday championship.

Melrose 54, Dora 39 — The top-seeded Lady Buffs, who won the last two 2A titles before being moved to 1A this year, made quick work of the Broncos with a 39-7 halftime lead.

Landry Widner was the game's only double-figure scorer with 13 points. Anahi Chavez led the Broncos with seven points.
