Hope Christian tops Portales boys

ALBUQUERQUE — Hope Christian once again got the better of the Portales boys basketball team, beating the Rams 65-52 in the much anticipated rematch Saturday night.

Darion Ontiveros led the way for the Rams (20-4, 6-2) with 16 points while Jeremie Karngbaye added 12. The Huskies’ (22-4, 8-0) were led by Marcus Medina with a game-high 26 points.

“We were up by six or seven in the second half,” said Rams coach Rickie McBroom. “It was a good game, but we lost. That’s about all I can say.”

According to McBroom, the Rams defense was where the team wanted to be, especially in the second half, but offensively the team struggled. The team didn’t “execute well enough” down the stretch, said McBroom.

The district loss is only Portales’ second of the season and still leaves them in a good position for the district playoffs, sitting in second place.

New Mexico Military will play Ruidoso on Monday, with the winner heading to Moriarty Tuesday. The winner of that contest will then play Portales Thursday with a 6 p.m. tipoff at the Rams Athletic Center.

Following that matchup, the winner will travel to Hope on Saturday for the district championship game.
