The Turn by Kim Harrison

In this official prequel to Kim Harrison's beloved Hollows series, set fifty years prior, Trisk and Kal are two supernatural rivals that are thrust into the fight to save their weaker kin, the ordinary humans. When a genetically combined tomato created to do away with world hunger is combined with a deadly new virus, a plague breaks out throughout America and targets the humans, the perfect hosts and means of spreading, and the different sects of paranormal species-including elves, witches and vampires-are faced with the decision to either let humanity die out, or expose themselves to help save them. While dark elf Trisk believes in helping and struggles to overcome the various prejudices against women and dark magic in the 1960s, many of the other paranormals don't care if humanity has anything to offer. Trisk is tasked with investigating the research of Dr. Daniel Plank, the man who created the virus, and Kal, her arrogant nemesis from school, is sent to oversee the process, with both of them unsure of how to work together or find a solution before all non-paranormal humans are wiped out.

Norse Mythology by Neil Gaiman

In his latest book for adults, bestselling author Neil Gaiman explores the original Norse myths in his own words and unique storytelling. Here we meet Odin, the ruler of the gods, both wise and ambitious; Frigg, Odin's wife and the queen of the gods; Odin's son Thor, the strongest but not quite the smartest of the gods and the god of thunder; and Loki, Odin's trickster brother and the son of a giant, the most manipulative and cunning of them all. With each chapter, Gaiman delves into the age-old stories concerning the beginnings of the gods, giants and dwarves, the creation of the nine connected worlds-including Asgard, the realm of the gods, and Midgard, the world of the humans in the center of the cosmos-and the sometimes unbelievably strange exploits of the gods through their interactions with mortals. Placed in chronological order, this collection of stories culminates in the event of Ragnarok, the war to end the reign of the gods and the birth of a new world order ruled by man.

My (Not So) Perfect Life by Sophie Kinsella

Katie Brenner's daily life in London feels like a constant struggle, from her less-than-lovely rented apartment to her strange roommates to her job where she has to smoothly navigate office politics and two-faced backstabbing. While everyone else seems to have the perfect life, including her smart, confident and sophisticated boss Demeter Farlowe, Katie has been posting slightly exaggerated pictures on Instagram to show off a “better” side of her, partially in hopes of making her father proud of her. When Demeter fires Katie, however, she goes back home to her family's farm in Somerset and sets up a vacation business. While the hectic life away from the big city gets farther away and Katie begins to thrive again, Demeter shows up at her business as a guest, throwing Katie's world into further disarray and making the chances for her happiness and future even more crucial.
