Weekly New Mexico fishing report

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 8.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake — Due to thinning ice conditions, the lake is open to walk-in traffic only. Fishing was good jigging Kastmasters and ice jigs tipped with PowerBait for rainbow trout. Fishing was very good using ice jigs tipped with meal worms or earth worms for perch. We had no other reports. For updates on ice conditions, call the state park office at (575) 377-1594.

Lake Alice — The lake has closed to ice fishing due to poor ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Lake Maloya — The lake has closed to ice fishing due to poor ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (505) 445-5607.

Monastery Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Pecos River — Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms, egg patterns and small bright colored nymphs for trout.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 48 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using wooly buggers, San Juan worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for rainbow trout.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 739 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — Fishing was slow to fair using Kastmasters and salmon eggs for trout.

Springer Lake — Ice fishing is not permitted.

Storrie Lake — There was very light fishing pressure on the lake this past week and just a few trout caught by anglers using PowerBait.

Ute Lake — Windy weather kept anglers off the lake this past week. We had no reports.

Northwest

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 482 cfs.

Albuquerque Area Drains — Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain was very good using salmon eggs, wax worms, earth worms and small bead-head nymphs for trout. Fishing on the, Belen and Corrales Drains was good using wax worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Bluewater Lake — Closed to ice fishing due to thin ice conditions. Shoreline fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports. For updates on ice conditions, contact the state park office at (505) 876-2391.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 104 cfs and 77 cfs respectively.

Cochiti Lake — Fishing pressure was light and fishing was slow for all species.

Fenton Lake — Closed to fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (575) 829-3630.

Heron Lake — Closed to fishing and all other activities due to thin ice conditions. For updates, call the state park office at (575) 588-7470.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 178 cfs. Early in the week, fishing on the Jemez was fair to good using wax worms, small bead-head nymphs and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing on the Cebolla above Fenton Lake was good using salmon eggs. We had no reports from other streams in the area.

Lake Farmington — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Our only other report was of a big bass listed in Catches of the week.

Navajo Lake — Fishing for northern pike was slow but a few were caught by anglers using swim baits. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake — We had no reports from anglers.  

San Juan River — Stream flow from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was 517 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair using OJs, small streamers, Desert Storms, white bunny leeches, egg patterns and red larva. Fishing through the bait waters was fair using salmon eggs, PowerBait, worms, copper John Barrs and jerk baits

Tingley Beach — Trout fishing at the Central and Youth ponds was very good for some and a bit slower for others. Best baits were PowerBait, homemade dough bait, wax worms and salmon eggs. We had no other reports.  

Southwest

Bear Canyon Lake — Fishing was very good using chartreuse PowerBait for trout. Memo Barajas and Fernie Herrera ages 82 and 71 caught limits of trout here last week. They were using cheese flavored and chartreuse PowerBait. We had no other reports.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, homemade dough bait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was fair using spoons and jigs for white bass and an occasional walleye. A few were also caught by anglers using deep crank baits. We had no other reports.

Escondida Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, homemade dough bait, wax worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Gila River — Stream flow on Monday morning was 1,330 cfs.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait for trout.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was slow for all species. Anglers reported murky water conditions.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs.

Young Pond — Fishing was good using salmon eggs, Zeke’s trout bait and PowerBait for trout.

Southeast

Bataan Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 11 cfs.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and marshmallows for trout. We had no other reports.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — Fishing was fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

El Rito Creek — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and salmon egg marshmallow combinations for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and marshmallows for trout.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout.

Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and homemade dough bait for trout.

Grindstone Reservoir — Fishing was fair using worms, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Lake Van — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms, spoons and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing for trout was good using marshmallows, salmon eggs and assorted colors of PowerBait.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 21 cfs. Trout fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs. We had no other reports.

Perch Lake — Fishing was very good using homemade dough bait, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 3.2 cfs.

Santa Rosa Lake — There were a few anglers on the water this past week but we had no reports.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was good using jig and grub combinations and spoons for walleye. Most of the fish were caught at 25 feet or deeper. Anglers fishing for walleye also picked up a few white bass. The surface water temp was about 45 degrees. We had no other reports.
