Rams cruise by NMMI, 62-28

PORTALES — The Portales High basketball easily handled New Mexico Military Institute Tuesday night, 62-28, on its way to the team’s 20th win of the season.

Led by Jeremie Karngbaye with 21 points, the Rams (20-3, 6-1) were able to spread the scoring around on the night, with coach Rickie McBroom going deep into his bench very early in the contest after the Rams scored the game's first 18 points. The Colts (2-19, 0-8) struggled against Portales’ defense throughout the night, scoring only four points in the first half.

The win marked the Rams’ 20th win of the season, a first under McBroom’s leadership. After the game, the team held a ceremony on the court to honor the team's six seniors.

McBroom thanked his players, their parents and the team staff during the ceremony, while also giving each player a personalized plaque with their picture.

The head coach also pointed out how the team’s goal was to win the rest of their games leading into the rematch with Hope Christian after losing to the Huskies at home several weeks prior. With that mission accomplished, McBroom said he and his team are not only looking towards the rematch, but well beyond that into the State Playoffs.

Portales will travel to Albuquerque on Saturday to take on the Huskies in a 5 p.m. tipoff.
