Judge to determine competence in 2014 homicide

CLOVIS — A district judge is expected to determine this morning whether a Clovis man will be competent to stand trial for a 2014 homicide.

District Attorney Andrea Reeb said she expects a ruling on the competency of Matthew Jennings, 28, from Judge Drew Tatum following a closed hearing Tuesday afternoon.

“If he’s found competent, (Tatum) will schedule another hearing,” Reeb said. “If he’s found not competent, we have other avenues to pursue.”

Reeb and Stephen McIlwain, Jennings’ attorney, had no other comments following the 45-minute hearing.

Jennings was taken into custody in the days following the Nov. 9, 2014, stabbing death of 23-year-old Ariel Ulibarri at Goodwin Trails Walking Park.
