LSC baseball poll puts Angelo State first, Hounds tied for sixth

Angelo State is expected to remain on top of the Lone Star Conference in baseball. Eastern New Mexico is expected to have company at the bottom.

That’s according to the LSC preseason poll, released Wednesday by the conference. The defending champion Rams received 13 of 19 first-place votes on ballots cast by LSC coaches, sports information directors and media representatives.

The Greyhounds were tied for sixth place in the pool with new LSC member Texas-Permian Basin.

The poll also included Texas A&M Kingsville in second with two first-place votes, West Texas A&M in third with two first-place votes and Tarleton State fourth with the final first-place vote. Cameron was slotted fifth, ahead of ENMU and UTPB, and were honored with Cody Bower (.330, 7 HR, 44 RBI) named preseason player of the year.

Angelo State’s Matt Shannon (7-5, 2.71 ERA, 118 K) was named preseason pitcher of the year.

The season begins Friday and includes a 10-week schedule. The final seven weeks of the season will include the 24-game conference play season, with each team playing one four-game series against the other six.

The top finisher will host the top four teams in a double-elimination tournament May 11-13, and the tournament champion will receive the league’s automatic bid in the national tournament.
