Rams make quick work of Warriors

PORTALES — The Portales boys basketball team proved too much for usually high-scoring Ruidoso team Tuesday night, winning 81-40.

The Rams (16-2, 2-0) went up quickly from the opening tip, with things only getting progressively worse for the Warriors (10-9, 1-1) as the game continued.

Jeremie Karngbaye led the effort with 21 points, while Braden Bridges poured in 17. Darion Ontiveros also added 10 points.

Beyond the usual names, Portales used its entire bench in the rout, with all but two players scoring.

Rams coach Rickie McBroom said, "They all know what they need to do, they know what their roles are and they play within that and that helps us a lot, it makes us good. We need to have some depth and we were able to do that."

Ruidoso, one of the higher scoring teams in Class 4A, averaged over 66 points per game coming into Tuesday's contest. The Rams, disappointed with their recent defensive efforts, made sure to put their foot down Tuesday against the Warriors on both ends of the court.

"We were real disappointed with the way we played defense at Moriarty, so we watched a lot of film yesterday and had a really good practice and I think our kids realized we didn't play as well as we needed to," said McBroom. "We were able to get out and run because of our defense — our best offense is our defense."

Portales will continue its season Friday, taking on New Mexico Military Institute. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Roswell.
