Gray commits to Lobo football program

CLOVIS — Clovis High School running back Micah Gray has given a verbal commitment to the football program at the University of New Mexico for the 2016-17 school year.

Gray, who led the Wildcats with 1,684 rushing yards and 29 rushing touchdowns, picked preferred walk-on status with the Division I Lobos over a scholarship offer with Division II Eastern New Mexico University.

The commitment was confirmed Wednesday night by Micah's father, Mitch Gray.

Walk-on players come to a program without a scholarship. A preferred walk-on has been recruited by the coach and is generally offered a spot on the roster. The player isn’t offered any scholarship money as a freshman.

In their fifth year under Bob Davie, the Lobos went 9-4 with a 6-2 mark in the Mountain West Conference. The Lobos are 27-36 under Davie, but are coming off back-to-back winning seasons.
