New Mexico report

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest on Monday was 26 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, top water lures, senkos and creature baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using spoons and blade baits for white bass and walleye. We had no other reports. Fishing pressure was light.

Cowles Ponds — Fishing was fair using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Coyote Creek — Fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs for trout.

Eagle Rock Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake — Bank fishing was fair using PowerBait, homemade dough baits and salmon egg garlic marshmallow combos for trout and worms for perch. Fishing was fair to good trolling with light weight tackle for trout. Kokanee snagging was very spotty with just a few taken.

Gallinas River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya — Fishing was good using PowerBait, wooly buggers and gold spoons for trout. We had no other reports.

Los Pinos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Monastery Lake — Fishing was very good using prince nymphs, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms under a bobber for trout.

Pecos River — Stream flow on Monday was 54 cfs. Trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, prince nymphs, salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms.

Red River — Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 48 cfs. Fishing was good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, egg patterns and spoons for trout.

Red River City Ponds — Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. The ponds close for the season November 15.

Rio Grande — Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 288 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using prince nymphs, San Juan worms, wooly buggers, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 14 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo — Stream flow at Penasco on Monday was 14 cfs. Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using salmon eggs. Fishing pressure was extremely light.

Santa Barbara River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir — Fishing was slow. A few trout were caught by anglers using PowerBait and salmon eggs.

Shuree Ponds — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.

Storrie Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Several limits were taken over the past weekend. We had no other reports.

Stubblefield Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake — Fishing was fair to good vertical jigging blade baits for walleye and white bass. The fish were scattered between 25 and 35 feet. Fishing was fair to good using stink baits for catfish. We had no other reports. The surface temp was in the low 60s.

Winsor Creek — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake — Fishing was fair using silver Rapalas from the bank for walleye. We had no reports from boaters.

Animas River — Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 387 cfs. Fishing was good using salmon eggs, copper John Barrs, streamers and small spoons for trout.

Albuquerque Area Drains — Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait, copper John Barrs and small streamers for trout. We had good reports from the Albuquerque Drain, Belen Drain and Peralta Drain.

Bluewater Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, homemade dough bait, salmon egg corn combinations, worms and Pistol Petes for trout. A few tiger muskie were caught by anglers using big streamers and swim baits. George Garcia, Jr. reported slow to fair fishing here Sunday. He and his two young boys were targeting trout from the bank and managed to catch seven rainbows and lose one to a tiger muskie. They were using PowerBait.

Brazos River — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes — Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice due to danger from falling trees. The lakes will not reopen in 2016.

Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 202 cfs and 208 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using spinners, small jigs, San Juan worms, wooly buggers, worms, PowerBait and salmon eggs for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was good using wooly buggers, bead-head hare’s ears, copper John Barrs and worms for trout.

Cochiti Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using jigs and creature baits for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.

El Vado Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Fenton Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using Pistol Petes, small spoons, salmon eggs and garlic PowerBait for trout. Anglers reported better fishing success during the week than over the weekend.

Heron Lake — Fishing was slow and fishing pressure was very light. Kokanee snagging opens for the season Nov. 11.

Jackson Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 37 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was slow to fair using salmon eggs and copper John Barrs for trout. Fishing on the Cebolla was fair using San Juan worms, streamers, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing on the East Fork was fair using prince nymphs, San Juan worms and worms for brown trout. We had no reports on other streams in the area.

Lake Farmington — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

Navajo Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using senkos, swim baits, creature baits and small plastic worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, jerk baits and salmon roe for northern pike and an occasional catfish. Kokanee snagging continued to be very good as most anglers reported taking limits. The Pine Main boat ramp and the surrounding 150-foot area is closed to anglers during the salmon snagging season. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake — We had no reports from anglers.

San Juan River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 413 cfs but will be reduced to 350 cfs Tuesday morning. Trout fishing through the quality waters section was fair to good using midge emergers, parachute Adams, RS2s, chocolate foam wing emergers, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs and bunny leeches. Fishing through the bait section was good using San Juan worms, jerk baits, PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Seven Springs Brood Pond — Fishing was very good using PowerBait and worms for trout.

Tingley Beach — Fishing at the Central and Youth Ponds was good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Trout Lakes — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bear Canyon Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, corn and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. We had no other reports.

Caballo Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Elephant Butte Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using Ned rigs, swim baits, lizards, senkos, jigs, grubs and tubes for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Shawn Kelso of El Paso reported tough bass fishing last Saturday. He did manage to catch a nice 3-pound largemouth. He was using a black and chartreuse lizard. Fishing was fair using grubs, and Kastmasters for white bass. Fishing for walleye was slow to fair using grubs and spoons. Night fishing for catfish was good for anglers fishing under the lights and using garlic scented beef and plastic worms. We had no other reports.

Escondida Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gila River — Stream flow as of Monday morning was 112 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Lake Roberts — Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande — Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.46 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond — Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and worms for trout. Fishing was fair to good using worms for catfish. We had no other reports.

Southeast

Alto Lake — Fishing was good using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Bataan Lake — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and spoons for trout. We had no other reports.

Black River — Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 11 cfs. Fishing was fair using PowerBait for trout.

Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Bonito Lake — Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.

Bottomless Lakes — Fishing at Ink Well and Pasture lakes was good using PowerBait for trout.

Brantley Lake — Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was good using Ned rigs, senkos, tubes, crank baits and jerk baits for largemouth bass and white bass. Rick Soto of Santa Fe had a great time here last week catching and releasing a great number of white bass and largemouth bass including a largemouth double caught on a Strike King 6XD. He reported finding the bigger fish at 13 to 17 feet. We had no other reports.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake — Fishing was fair using PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing was fair using PowerBait and worms for catfish. We had no other reports.

Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and homemade dough bait for trout. We had no other reports.

El Rito Creek — Fishing was very good using PowerBait, San Juan worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

Greene Acres Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week.

Grindstone Reservoir — Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake — Fishing was very good using PowerBait for trout.

Lake Van — Fishing was good using worms, PowerBait, worms, homemade dough bait and Pistol Petes under a bubble for trout. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was slow but there were a few trout caught by anglers using PowerBait and worms.

Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was .51 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.

Perch Lake — Fishing was good using prince nymphs, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 6.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake — Fishing was fair to good using swim baits, tubes, senkos, worms and chigger craws for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. We had no other reports.

Sumner Lake — Fishing was good using tubes, craws, swim baits, worms and senkos for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using bottom bouncer night crawler rigs and curly tail grubs for walleye. We had no other reports.
