Fall enrollment up at CCC

September 3, 2014

Staff report

Fall enrollment at Clovis Community College increased this fall, breaking a five-year slide.

Enrollment jumped 5 percent from the same time last year, from 3,476 to 3,635, according to Lisa Spencer, marketing director for CCC.

CCC reached a high enrollment number in 2009 of 4,282, a figure that has dropped about 3 percent a year since.

This year’s increase caught CCC President Becky Rowley off guard.

“Frankly, I’m really surprised they are up right now,” said Rowley, entering her fourth year as president. “Nobody is up right now. Not at the national level, and statewide enrollment is down.

Rowley believed part of the jump of 169 students may be students getting their prerequisites in for a new physical therapy assistant program, which is expected to offered in the spring.

In fact, it is the occupational programs that are growing at the school, Rowley said, mentioning nursing, radiology, welding and cosmetology at the top growing programs. She also said numbers in legal studies program — criminal justice — are also up.

“We offer a little bit of everything, but I think our niche is health care,” Rowley said. “The community still has a lot of health care needs. About 70 percent of the nurses in the area come from us.”
