Airman involved in shooting off base

Staff report

Confusion over an airman shot off-base prompted about a 30-minute lockdown Wednesday at Cannon Air Force Base.

The lockdown was ordered at 4:49 p.m. based on information an airman assigned to Cannon was a possible gunshot victim at an on-base location, according to a press release from Cannon’s public affairs office. The lockdown was lifted about 20 minutes later after the base received a clarification that the incident happened off-base, the release said.

The release said further details will be released as the investigation continues.

Several local Facebook postings were speculating it was an accidental shooting at a business outside Clovis city limits. Curry County Undersheriff Wesley Waller wasn’t immediately available for comment.
