Weekly fishing report — July 29

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities. NortheastCharette Lakes — Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, Pistol Petes, hoppers and small bucktail spinners. Fishing for perch was fair using worms. Cimarron River — Stream flow below Eagle Nest Monday was 9.7cfs. Trout fishing below the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using midge emergers, hares ears, Chernobyl ants and micro mays. A few trout were also taken on worms. We had no reports from the Gravel Pit Lakes. Clayton Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Conchas Lake — Fishing at night was fair to good using chicken liver, homemade stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing for bluegill was fair to good using poppers and worms. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass slowed down but there were a few fish caught by anglers using top water lures, jerk baits and swim baits. Fishing was slow to fair trolling crank baits for white bass. We had no reports on other species. Coyote Creek — Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms, parachute Adams and bead head pheasant tails. Eagle Rock Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Eagle Nest Lake — Fishing was fair trolling with light tackle using Arnies and Platte River specials for a mix of rainbow trout and kokanee. Anglers fishing from the bank and from anchored boats and using Power Bait caught a few trout. Fishing for perch was very good using worms. We had no reports on northern pike. Gallinas River — We had no reports from anglers this week. Hopewell Lake — Trout fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, BWOs, spinners, salmon eggs and Power Bait. Lake Alice — Trout fishing was slow. Lake Maloya — Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, PMDs, parachute Adams, homemade dough bait and salmon peach Power Bait. The best action continues to be in the morning and evening hours. Los Pinos — We had no reports from anglers this week. Manzano Lake — Fishing was slow. Maxwell Lake 13 — Fishing was slow for all species. Monastery Lake — The Daniel and Melissa Ortega family of Las Cruces fished here over the weekend and reported trout fishing as being very good. They caught a dozen stocker size rainbows while using Power Bait and a black and white Rooster Tail. They also reported that other anglers were also catching good numbers of trout. Morphy Lake — Fishing was slow. Pecos River — Water flow near the town of Pecos Monday was 85cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Red River — Water flow near the hatchery Monday was 85cfs and the water was clearing. Trout fishing near the hatchery was very good using bead head hares ears, copper John Barrs, poundmeisters, hoppers, pheasant tail nymphs and worms. Fishing at the hatchery pond was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and hoppers. Rio Costilla — Water flow below the dam as of Monday morning was 63cfs. Trout fishing was good using royal stimulators, small hopper patterns and size 16 Hairs ears. Rio Grande — Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge Monday was 405cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. On the Rio from Albuquerque to Socorro fishing was fair to good using night crawlers, chicken liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Rio Hondo — Stream flow near Valdez Monday was 25cfs. Fishing on the upper Hondo was very good using PMDs, small hoppers and comparaduns. Rio Mora — Stream flow near Terrero Monday was 10cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Pueblo — Stream flow near Penasco Monday was 10cfs. Fishing was fair to good using stimulators, copper John Barrs, bead head hares ears, night crawlers and salmon eggs. Santa Barbara — We had no reports from anglers this week. Shuree Ponds — The water level is extremely low and the pH level is high. The ponds are not being stocked at present. Springer Lake — Fishing was fair using cut bait and worms for catfish up to 24 inches in length. We had no reports on other species. Storrie Lake — Fishing at night was fair to good using night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow. Ute Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using top water lures in the early morning hours for largemouth bass. Anglers using a variety of plastics during the day were catching an occasional smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair trolling deep running crank baits for white bass. Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp was in the high 70s. NorthwestAbiquiu Lake — Night fishing was fair to good using liver and hot dogs for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using top water lures, jerk baits, swim baits and tubes for smallmouth bass. A few walleye were caught by anglers using jig and craw and jig and curly tail combinations over 20 to 30 feet of water. We had no reports on other species. Animas River — Water flow near Aztec Monday morning was 306cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Albuquerque Area Drains — We had no reports from anglers this week. Bluewater Lake — Fishing was fair to good using top water lures, crank baits and suspending jerk baits for tiger musky. Ken and Kathy Roberts of Tucson had a great time here mid-month. It was the highlight of a three-week trip, which included stops at Quemado, Cochiti and the Taos area lakes, and streams where they had a great time fishing, enjoying the scenery and meeting nice people. Ken caught and released 16 tiger musky with the biggest being 36 inches. He was using swim baits and spinner baits and fishing the east side of the lake. Brazos River — Trout fishing was slow. Canjilon Lakes — Fishing on the upper lake was good using spinners salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout. Chama River — Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 290cfs and 609cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair to good using Pistol Petes, bead head hares ears, Rapalas, pins minnows, night crawlers and salmon eggs for a mix of brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Chris Ortega of Albuquerque fished above and below El Vado over the weekend and reported great fishing for browns and rainbows. He was using custom-made prop flies and Rapalas. Below Abiquiu fishing was slow. The water was quite murky. Cochiti Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. There were a few carp and catfish caught by anglers using corn flavored dough bait, corn and worms. El Vado Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. There is still plenty of water for launching boats at the park ramp. This one might be worth a try for trolling for trout and kokanee. Fenton Lake — Trout fishing was slow. The moss has spread across most of the lake. Heron Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Jackson Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Jemez Waters — Stream flow on the Jemez as of Monday was 5.7cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez and the Cebolla was slow. Mark Kocon fished the Jemez over the weekend and reported that the water was quite muddy and warm and fishing as slow. We had no reports on other streams in the area. Laguna Del Campo — We had no reports from anglers this week. Lake Farmington — Fishing was slow for all species. Navajo Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using top water lures, swim baits and small tubes for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using night crawlers and liver for catfish. Fishing was fair trolling Arnies, Panther Martins and Cripplures tipped with corn for kokanee. We had no reports on other species. San Gregorio — We had no reports from anglers this week. San Juan — Water flow below Navajo Monday was 654cfs.Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was fair to good using midge patterns, bead head pheasant tails, San Juan worms, sparkle worms, parachute Adams and streamers. Fishing through the bait waters was good using jerk baits, wooly buggers, night crawlers and Power Bait. Santa Cruz Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using Fisher Chick spinners, Power Bait and Pistol Petes for trout. We had no reports on other species. Seven Springs Brood Pond — Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait. Tingley Beach — Fishing was slow for all species. SouthwestBear Canyon — Fishing was slow for all species. Bill Evans Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Caballo Lake — Fishing was slow for all species Elephant Butte Lake — Night fishing was good using shiners, shrimp, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was fair using top water lures early and late in the day for a mix of white bass and largemouth bass. A few bass were also taken on tubes, jerk baits and crank baits. Fishing for bluegill was fair to good using worms and poppers. The Marina Del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site marinas are open. Escondida Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Gila River — Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 33cfs. Fishing on the main river and the East and West Fork was slow. Glenwood Pond — Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait. Lake Roberts — We had no reports from anglers this week. Percha Dam — Fishing was good using night crawlers and liver for catfish. Quemado Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Rio Grande — Water flow below Elephant Butte Monday was 1,780cfs. Fishing was very good using dead shiners, chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. Anglers using spoons caught a few white bass. Fishing below Caballo Lake was good using night crawlers and spoons for walleye and night crawlers and liver for catfish. We had no reports on other species. Snow Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Young Pond — Fishing was slow for all species. SoutheastBataan Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Black River — Stream flow at Malaga Monday was .40cfs. We had no reports from anglers. Blue Hole Park Pond — Fishing was slow for all species. Bonito Lake — Closed. Bosque Redondo — Fishing was slow for all species. Bottomless Lakes — The main entrance to the park has reopened. We had no reports from anglers. Brantley Lake — Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish. We had no reports from anglers this week. Carlsbad Municipal Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Chaparral Park Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. El Rito Creek — Fishing was slow to fair using worms, salmon eggs and Power Bait for trout. Eunice Lake — We had no reports from anglers this week. Green Meadow Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Greene Acres Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Grindstone Reservoir — We had no reports from anglers this week. Jal Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Lake Van — Fishing was slow for all species. Oasis Park Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Pecos River — Stream flow below Sumner Lake Monday was 81cfs. Fishing was slow for all species. Perch Lake — Fishing was slow for all species. Ruidoso River — Stream flow at Hollywood Monday was 8cfs. Fishing was slow. Santa Rosa Lake — Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, hot dogs, beef liver and night crawlers for catfish. Anglers using night crawlers also picked up an occasional walleye. Fishing for all other species was slow. Sumner Lake — Fishing was slow for all species.
