Medlin has shot at repeat CNFR title

Staff report

CASPER, Wyo. — Eastern New Mexico University’s Logan Medlin and partner Billy Bob Brown of Tarleton State are positioned for a possible repeat title in team roping in tonight’s short go of the College National Finals Rodeo.

ENMU junior Hayden Segelke is also looking for a title in goat tying.

ENMU will have three entries in the finals of the CNFR, with Medlin and Brown entering tonight’s competition second overall with a time of 20.3 seconds for the first three rounds, including a 6.2 clocking on Friday. They trail Brody Adams and Clay Crozier of Colorado Northwest Community College, who are at 19.6.

ENMU coach Albert Flinn said Medlin and Brown had a good night. “They just did what they needed to do to be in position to win it,” he said.

Meantime, Segelke, who finished her three rounds earlier this week, has a slim lead in the average in goat tying with a time of 19.3 seconds to 19.4 for Chadron State’s Shelby Winchell.

Before transferring to ENMU, Segelke was the women’s CNFR all-around champion in each of the last two years at Northeastern Colorado CC, and was second in goat tying last year.

“She’s a tough individual,” Flinn said. “Goat tying has been her specialty.

“We’ve got a very good chance to come out with two national champions.”

ENMU senior TiAda Gray had a no-score in Friday’s goat tying competition and did not advance to the finals.

Another ENMU junior, Keely Weger, is currently tied for ninth in goat tying and will also compete in tonight’s finals. “She has a chance to be in the top five,” Flinn said.

In women’s team standings, the Zias are in third place with 255 points, trailing Central Arizona College (347 1/2) and Chadron (300). Tennessee-Martin leads men’s team standings at 455, while Tarleton State is second at 410.
