Kathy Jennings does one of her daily duties as postmaster, time stamping all the mail that comes into the office on Monday at the Floyd post office. This year Jennings won the New Mexico Postmaster of the Year, which is voted by other postmasters around the state.
Kathy Jennings has lived in McAlister for most of her life and 16 years ago she took over the job of being a postmaster at the town’s post office.
Then in 2004, Jennings took the postmaster job at Floyd and the community has taken notice of her hard work.
Jennings’ hard work has now been recognized, winning the New Mexico Postmaster of the Year from the state’s chapter of the National League of Postmasters.
Jennings was nominated by other postmasters around the state.
“I think I was nominated because there were a lot of new postmasters around the area and if they had a question, I would answer for them. They can’t learn everything in a short amount of time, so I was willing to help them,” Jennings said.
Jennings has a brother living in House and her mother lives in Clovis.
What are some of your duties as postmaster?
I run the whole post office, here in Floyd, but since it is so small, I also do all the cleaning in the office as well. I sort letters and just keep the office going. I do a lot of paper work for the office as well.
What’s the favorite part of your job?
The people of course. Since it is a small town, the people visit with me and then they visit with each other. In larger post offices, customers do not want to wait more than five minutes to get their mail sent, but here there is no rush. It makes it nice.
What difficulties do you face as a postmaster?
It is the paperwork and the rules and regulations I have to follow. We have to do some paperwork once a year and it can be very difficult to do. Also, I just got a new computer and I have to learn how it works and everything is in a different place. That is the most stressful thing right now.
How do you feel about winning postmaster of the year?
I am totally in shock and in awe. I feel so humbled and honored to win this award. I really enjoyed the community and getting to meet everyone and get to know the postmasters in this area. The community has really made me feel welcome.
What changes have you seen since you have been a postmaster?
The technology has changed a lot since the 16 years I have been working here. The paperwork has changed a lot. The latest technology is now the carrier has a cell phone app where the carrier can tell the customers in real time when their mail arrives. It is always evolving here.
