Eastern New Mexico University student Sarah Cogar feels she knows the importance of keeping the Earth clean. She rides her bike to her classes and she tries to help out the environment every way she can.
“We have one Earth and we should not abuse it. We need to keep it beautiful for the next generation and it is up to us to do that,” Cogar said.
Cogar also made another choice Tuesday she thinks will benefit the Earth by eating with compostable utensils and eating off reusable plates that can be used as a Frisbee.
Her efforts were part of an Earth Day celebration that took place on ENMU’s campus hosted by ENMU’s Associated Students Activities Board (ASAB).
Jena Rizcallah, director of the event and ASAB member, said the event is put on every year.
This year ASAB invited This Century, a band from Arizona, who played during the Earth Day event. The band played acoustic versions of their songs as many students listened while eating their Earth Day meal.
“We were fortunate that today is such a beautiful day and everyone can enjoy the food outside,” Rizcallah said.
Gabe Ayala said he especially enjoyed eating outside instead of eating in the Campus Union Building.
“It is just a nice day, it is very enjoyable,” said Ayala, a communicative disorders major.
The students ate grilled corn-on-the-cob, barbecue sandwiches and a variety of salads while they sat in the sun in the breezy weather.
Diane Resendez, a psychology major, thought the day’s weather was a great reminder to keep the Earth clean.
“Earth Day raises awareness for recycling and we should strive to be better at that,” Resendez said.
When some of the students finished the meal, they got their Frisbee plates washed and then tossed their plates around.
Rizcallah said the celebration was fun and it brought awareness to why they celebrate Earth Day.
“It is one day we get to appreciate our Earth and how valuable it is to us,” Rizcallah said.
