No. 11 ASU blanks Zias in opener

Staff report

SAN ANGELO, Texas — Angelo State jumped on Eastern New Mexico University for four first-inning runs on Friday night and the 11th-ranked Rambelles cruised to an 8-0 victory in the opener of a Lone Star Conference softball series.

Mary Kate McKay pitched a seven-hit shutout for the Rambelles (29-9, 12-3 LSC), needing only 74 pitches in a game stopped in the bottom of the sixth because of the eight-run rule. McKay (8-3) struck out only one batter and didn’t walk anyone.

ENMU (11-28, 1-16) got 2-for-3 outings from second baseman Jackie Candelaria and first baseman Albie Medina. The Zias had one hit in every inning except the fifth, when they put together a serious scoring threat as Shelby Ripple led off with a double and took third on a single to left by Cailin Garmon.

McKay then struck out leadoff hitter Amanda Martinez. After Garmon stole second, McKay got out of the inning by retiring Candelaria on a groundout to third and Audrey Velasquez on a popup to second.

Right fielder Tina Cisneros drove in three runs for ASU, leading off the fourth inning with her fifth homer of the season and adding a two-run double in the fifth. The Rambelles ended it in the sixth on a one-out walk to Morgan Spearman, a stolen base and Micherie Koria’s double to left.
