ENMU offense stymied by Cameron

LAWTON, Okla. — Senior Drew Reidt allowed five hits over 7 2/3 innings, and Cameron got its second Lone Star Conference win of the season, 4-2 over Eastern New Mexico University on Friday.

Reidt (3-4) retired the first 11 Greyhounds he faced, and didn’t allow an ENMU baserunner past first base until the sixth inning while lowering his season ERA to 2.53.

Cameron (7-14, 2-9) scored twice on errors, once in the first and once in the seventh, and got a third-inning RBI groundout from Kas Sanders and a run-scoring single in the sixth from first baseman Brad Blumer.

The Greyhounds (14-11, 4-9) scored both of their runs on Matthew Burks’ first homer of the season, an eighth-inning shot to left field. Catcher Chad Highberger, who also came home on Burks’ homer, went 2-for-3 on the day.

The teams will play again in an 11 a.m. (CST) doubleheader, then close up the series with a single game set for noon (CST) Sunday.

Zia softball swept at Tarleton State

Tarleton State had little trouble with Eastern New Mexico, pulling an 10-2, 8-0 doubleheader sweep over the visiting Zias to pull to .500 in Lone Star Conference play.

The TexAnns (13-5, 5-5 LSC) pounded out 22 hits, including a 4-for-5 day with four runs for catcher Taylor Wells during the two-game set. Both games were called early due to the eight-runs-after-five mercy rule.

The Zias (7-19, 1-9) managed 10 hits on the day, with freshman shortstop Audrey Velasquez going 2-for-3 in the opener with an RBI double, but never led in their eighth and ninth straight losses.

The teams will wrap up the series with a noon CST doubleheader, and the Zias will be back home Monday for an 11 a.m. doubleheader against UC-Colorado Springs.

Grube places in pair of events

ABILENE, Texas — Eastern New Mexico sophomore Laura Grube finished third in the discus and fifth in the hammer throw during the first day of the War Hawk Classic hosted by McMurry University.

Grube, a native of Crow, Ore., a throw of 41.70 meters in the discus and a toss of 42.20 meters in the hammer. Her hammer toss finished just 0.35 meters behind fourth-place finisher Evlyn Collins of Hardin-Simmons.

Fellow sophomore Clarissa Salazar finished eighth in the hammer at 34.45 meters.
