Club notes — Jan. 19

Encanto Garden Club

Encanto Garden Club’s monthly meeting was held Jan. 8.

President Jacque Wuest called the meeting to order. Bobbi Lyons provided refreshments. Donna Whitfield won the door prize.

Parks and Recreation Director Bill Bizzell, guest speaker, informed club members of future ongoing plans for our city parks. All the old Siberian Elms are past their prime and dying. In the near future these trees that have provided a canopy of shade for the past 70-80 years at the Hillcrest will be gone. Replacement trees consist of the Texas Red Oak, Hackberry, Kentucky Coffee and Burr Oak trees. These are drought and disease resistant and should be considered in our own landscapes.

It’s to the city’s advantage that they own a well at Hillcrest with EPCOR only as backup. A re-usable water project is also being utilized.

Next month members will celebrate our club’s 53rd birthday.

Daughters of the American Revolution

The El Portal chapter of the Daughter’s of the American Revolution met Jan. 11 at the home of Jessie Strauch.

The meeting was called to order and opening rituals were led by Regent Vicky Stratton. Cori Snobble read the President General’s minutes and the National Defense minutes were presented by Strauch.

Stratton gave the Constitutional minutes followed by Snobble with the Indian Minutes.

Several students have submitted essays for the good citizen contest and winners will be awarded certificates at the February meeting.

Nancy Bauder presented the program which was about the Declaration of Independence and what happened to the signers as a result of their actions. Members present were Sandy Hays, Wenonah Hunton, Pam Wallace, Bauder, Strauch, Snobble, Stratton and Karolyn Sailor. Katelyn Hawkins was a guest.

Altrusa International

The Altrusa International Inc. Club of Portales met noon Jan. 13 in the Central Annex.

President Linda Leaming called the meeting to order and Cathy Rankin led the opening ceremonies and gave the Altrusa Accent.

Lori Bohm moved that the Nov. 11 minutes be approved; the motion was seconded, and it carried. Lory Adams reported 21 members and 12 guests.

Sheryl Borden drew for the Queen of Hearts.

Secret Pals were thanked.

Sue Bracksieck reported the Jan. 2 meeting will include a workday conducted by the Literacy Committee.

Bette Martinez announced proceeds from the March 1 Char-i-Tea would go to the New Mexico Christian Children’s Home this year.

Nancy Legleiter passed a signup sheet for Meals on Wheels for March.

Adams reported Holiday Happenings.

Beverly Bennett gave a list of donors for the Silent Auction.

Following adjournment of the meeting, Lori Ribble, membership chair, introduced Kelsey Prince.
