Silence pleases me. Tiny noises are the ones I enjoy most. Like a clock ticking quietly in the middle of the night, no others sounds to drown it out. Volume from a distance. Children

screaming on a carnival ride. A train whistle floating on the night air. Fireworks a few miles away.

The world is a noisy place. Machinery on the jobsite. Music blaring from speakers. I’m always wishing things were a bit quieter.

I’ll let you in on a little secret. One of my pet peeves is hearing a conversation in a restaurant from people three tables away.

But the greatest annoyance of all is the ill-mannered and incessant clamoring of news panels. Each person talking over the other, demanding to be heard, believing they’ll be the victor in the debate if they state the case loudly, or cut their opponent off before a point can be made.

I’m back on the soap box clanging on the cymbal today. I felt compelled to write this column in my silent office after reading this delightfully loud quote from Mark Twain.
