Club notes — Jan. 12

CCAER Notes

Curry County Association of Educational Retirees met Jan. 7 at K Bob’s in Clovis.

Dianne Davis called the meeting to order and Linda Riley gave the opening prayer, after which the members pledged to the flags.

Delman Shirley introduced the are legislators in attendance, Dennis Roach, Anna Crook and Pat Woods. Each spoke on items coming up in the Legislature, which begins in two weeks.

Topics included teacher evaluation, lottery for tuition for New Mexico high school graduates, gun control, common core curriculum, tax lightening, Tres Amigas, same-sex marriage, Ute Water project and not taking from the permanent fund. A discussion held about the common core curriculum.

Minutes and the treasurer’s report were approved. Mary Hastain gave the Benevolence Committee report.

Seven cards were sent.

Members are reminded to keep track of their volunteer hours in 2014.

January birthdays were celebrated.

Jim Turnbough won the door prize.

Altrusa Club Notes

Portales Woman’s Club met Jan. 8 with President Julie Nickles presiding.

Janice Beimer led the pledges and Lois Crozier led the collect. Gaynelle Thomas gave the invocation.

There were 15 members present.

The minutes from the previous meeting were approved, and the treasurer’s report was filed.

The door prize was won by Wanda Pettus.

A thank you note was read from the Hartley House for socks donated by the club.

Nickles presided over the lighting of the birthday candle celebrating the club’s 111th birthday.

Beth Banda introduced June Ferguson, state president of the General Federation of Woman’s Clubs, who talked about the importance of volunteers.

Thomas, chair of the hostess committee, introduced others serving with her: Amber Hamilton, Noelle Bartl and Janice Beimer.

The next meeting will be 11:30 a.m. Feb. 12 at the club building.
