Fishing report — Nov. 28

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Closed for the season.

Cimarron River: Water flow below Eagle Nest Lake on Monday was .70 cfs. Keep this water on your list for spring. Low water conditions this time of year make for some tough fishing.

Clayton Lake: Closed for the season.

Conchas Lake: The shallow and steep boat ramps on the north side of the lake are now open along with the Cove campground ramp. Fishing pressure was very light and fishing was described as slow for all species.

Coyote Creek: Snowy weather has kept anglers away from here for several days. As of Monday morning there was a 7-inch blanket of snow over the area. We had no reports from anglers.

Eagle Nest Lake: With ice forming along the bank, the boat ramp has been closed and the lake is currently closed to ice fishing. For updated information, contact the State Park office at 575-377-1594

Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, salmon peach Power Bait and Panther Martins for trout.

Maxwell Lakes: Closed for the season.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs. The lake is closed to ice fishing.

Morphy Lake: Closed for the season.

Pecos River: Water flow near the town of Pecos on Monday was 40 cfs. The Mora and Jamie Koch fishing and recreation areas have reopened. The Bert Clancy and Terrero campgrounds remain closed. Fishing during the early part of last week was good salmon eggs, egg pattern flies and streamers for a mix of brown and rainbow trout.

Red River: Water flow near the hatchery on Monday was 57 cfs. Before the big storm, fishing was good using bead-head pheasant tails, rainbow scuds and salmon eggs for a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout.

Rio Grande: Water flow near the Taos Junction Bridge on Monday was 719 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 13 cfs.

Rio Mora: Water flow near Terrero on Monday was 14 cfs.

Rio Pueblo: Water flow near Penasco on Monday was 20 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Ute Lake: The surface temp as of Monday was in the low 50s. Fishing remained slow for all species with just a few walleye catches reported by anglers using slab spoons and blade baits. Fishing pressure was very light.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 447 cfs.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, Power Bait and parachute adams for trout. The best reports this past week came from anglers fishing the Albuquerque, Bernalillo and Corrales Drains.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. There was about three inches of snow around the shoreline as of this past Sunday. Anglers should be aware that it is illegal to use bait fish at this lake.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 295 cfs and 100 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair using salmon eggs, Power Bait and Rapalas for a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu. We had no reports on kokanee snagging on the portion of the river from El Vado Lake to the west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area. The season runs through December.

Cochiti Lake: The main boat ramp is now open. The Tetilla Peak area and the day use area are closed for the season but other areas are open for bank fishing.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was extremely light.

Fenton Lake: A layer of ice has formed on the lake and it is closed to fishing and will remain closed until ice out in the spring..

Heron Lake: The only boat ramp open is the primitive ramp in the Ridge Rock area. Boaters are able to launch but advised to use caution. Launching with four-wheel-drive vehicles is recommended. Kokanee snagging was reported as good over the weekend and the fish were still firm. Best reports came from the Ridge Rock and Brushy Point areas. Fishing for rainbow trout was fair using roe sacs and Power Bait.

Jackson Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs and spinners. We had no reports on other species.

Jemez Waters: The Jemez River was flowing at 24 cfs on Monday. Trout fishing on the lower section of the Jemez was good using salmon eggs and copper John Barrs. As of Monday morning the roads were clear through the Jemez Springs area. Fishing on the Rio Cebolla and the Rio Guadalupe was slow with very light fishing pressure. We had no reports on the East Fork or Rio Las Vacas. The Valles Caldera has been closed to fishing for the winter but should be back up and running next spring.

Laguna del Campo: Closed for the season.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light. The surface water temp ranged from the high 40s to the low 50s.

San Juan: Water flow below Navajo on Monday was 250 cfs. Fishing through the Quality Waters was good using black leeches, beetle imitations and small midge patterns. Fishing through the bait waters was reported as fair to good by anglers using salmon eggs, Power Bait and streamers.

Santa Cruz Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Tingley Beach: Trout fishing was very good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes at the Central and Youth Ponds. We had no reports on other species. Trout fishing at the Catch and Release Pond was fair using egg patterns, small midge patterns and leeches.

Southwest

Bear Canyon: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing for trout was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, homemade dough bait, Pistol Petes and spinners. We had no reports on other species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was extremely slow for all species and fishing pressure was very light.

Elephant Butte: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light over the past weekend due to bad weather conditions. The surface water temp ranged from the low to mid 50s. The Marina del Sur, Rock Canyon and Dam Site boat ramps are now open. The Monticello ramp remains closed due to low water conditions.

Escondida Lake: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes. We had no reports on other species.

Gila River: Water flow on the Gila as of this past Monday was 118 cfs.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using Power Bait for trout.

Lake Roberts: A construction project to improve the dam has begun and falling lake levels may make it increasingly difficult to fish. The project is expected to continue into next summer.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Rio Grande: Trout fishing below Elephant Butte was fair using salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Young Pond: Trout fishing was slow to fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: Trout fishing was using Power Bait, salmon eggs and spinners. We had no reports on other species.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 22 cfs. We had no reports from anglers but trout fishing should be good as this area received its first winter stocking.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bottomless Lakes: Trout fishing at the Devil’s Inkwell has been good for anglers using Z Rays, Super Dupers and rainbow and chartreuse Power Bait.

Brantley Lake: The State Park office announced the reopening of the lake to boating and swimming. Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Trout fishing was good using Panther Martins, Z Rays and Power Bait.

Chaparral Park Lake: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs and Power Bait.

Eunice Lake: Trout fishing was fair using salmon eggs, Power Bait and worms.

Greene Acres Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs. Jose Duran caught a nice chunky 13-inch rainbow this past week. He was using Power Bait.

Green Meadow Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes under a bubble.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, homemade dough bait, small Kastmasters and small Daredevles for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Jal Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 19 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Light pressure this past week due to windy, snowy weather conditions. Fishing was slow.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Ruidoso on Monday was 2.4 cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow for all species and fishing pressure was light. .

Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure continues to be very light. The Alamo boat ramp and the main boat ramp are the only ramps open.
