Angelo State sweeps Zias

With Eastern New Mexico University’s volleyball team coming off a three-game sweep of Tarleton State the night before, the 17th-ranked Angelo State Rambelles weren’t about to take any chances.

ASU broke away from a tie with an 18-3 run to close out the first set and went on to a 25-10, 25-14, 25-21 victory over the Zias on Saturday at Greyhound Arena.

Arielle Bond had 13 kills and Kaelen Valdez 10 for the Rambelles (20-7, 11-4 LSC), while setter Megan Jo Keffury compiled a double-double with 11 digs and 32 assists.

For the Zias, freshman outside hitters Lauren Frye and Courtney Lawson compiled nine and six kills, respectively.

ENMU (7-17, 4-10) took 1-0 leads in each of the first two sets, but that was all it was able to manage.

The teams were tied 7-7 in the first game when the Rambelles took off. ASU used a four-point run to take the lead in the second set after the Zias scored first and never looked back.

ENMU managed another 7-7 tie in the third set, and pulled to within a point again on back-to-back kills by Lawson before ASU went on an 8-0 run.

The Zias regrouped and cut the deficit to 23-21 on a combination block by Agatha Gibbons and Lawson, but made errors on the next two points to finish it out.

ENMU plays its final home match at 7 p.m. Tuesday against New Mexico Highlands. The Zias finish the season with LSC road contests against Texas A&M-Commerce on Friday and Texas Woman’s on Saturday.
