Hounds beat WT in rare dual meet

BLACKWATER DRAW — Led by junior Kaspars Briska, the Eastern New Mexico University cross country team scored a 26-31 victory over West Texas A&M in a dual meet on Tuesday at Blackwater Draw.

Briska, from Riga, Latvia, posted an eight-kilometer time of 25 minutes, 47.90 seconds. Junior Justin Samaniego was third for the Greyhounds while freshman Chase Beausoleil, a Clovis High grad, came in fourth.

In women’s competition, WT took five of the top six spots and rolled to a 17-39 victory over the Zias.

WT’s Mireia Gaurner won the 6K race with a time of 22:47.08. ENMU’s top time was a season-best 23:19.78, good for fourth place, by sophomore Amber Saiz.

The dual meet was the first home competition for ENMU since Sept. 1, 2006.

The Hounds and Zias will now host the Lone Star Conference championships on Oct. 26, also at Blackwater Draw. The women’s race kicks off the event at 9:30 a.m.
