Zias tie for first at Borger rodeo

BORGER, Texas — Coming off a win last week at Vernon (Texas) College, the Eastern New Mexico University women’s rodeo team finished in a four-way tie for first over the weekend in the Frank Phillips College rodeo.

The Zias, Texas Tech, South Plains College and Sul Ross State all finished with 150 points, with West Texas A&M fifth at 100.

On the men’s side, the Greyhounds were sixth with 245 points. Tarleton State took team honors with 560 points, with Weatherford College coming in second at 385.

As they did at Vernon, the women had a strong showing in breakaway roping. Sophomore Macy Devonport was first in the average, split first and second in the first go and took second in the short go, while freshman Hayden Segelke placed fourth in the average.

Junior Keely Weger split third and fourth in the average in goat tying after splitting third and fourth in the first go with freshman teammate Lindsey Adcock. Sophomore Madison Anderson took sixth in barrel racing.

For the men, senior Logan Medlin teamed with Tarleton State’s Billy Bob Brown to seep team roping competition, winning the first go, the short go and the average. Senior Ace Thurston was sixth in the first go in both steer wrestling and bareback riding.

ENMU teams return to action in the Texas Tech rodeo at Lubbock, beginning on Thursday.
