Roswell overpowers Rams

Things didn’t start out too well for the Portales boys soccer team on Thursday, and they never got better.

Senior Fernando Sanchez scored for Roswell High in the second minute, and the Coyotes went on to a 9-0 victory over the Rams at PHS.

Roswell High (16-1) built a 4-0 halftime lead, scored twice in the first four minutes of the second half and then tacked on three more in the final eight minutes.

Sanchez finished with a hat trick for the Coyotes, while sophomore Victor Garcia added a pair of goals, both in the first half.

The Coyotes posted a 25-2 edge on PHS in shots on goal. Junior Lane Nichols had 16 saves for Portales.

Both Portales squads are home for the next three matches, starting with District 2/1A-3A outings against Desert Academy on Saturay. The girls match kicks off the doubleheader at 1 p.m.

Volleyball — The Elida Lady Tigers improved to 13-1 for the season on Thursday with a 25-10, 25-14, 25-11 non-district win at Floyd.

The team split preliminary matches, with Elida taking the junior varsity contest 25-10, 25-17 and Floyd claiming the junior high tilt in two games (scores not available).

Also, the Dora Lady Coyotes improved to 3-8 for the season with a 25-15, 25-18, 25-16 home non-district victory over the Grady Lady Bronchos.
