Three 'high' students hospitalized

Three Portales High School students described by city Police Chief Doug Jones as “extremely high” were transported by ambulance from the school to the emergency room at Roosevelt General Hospital on Tuesday morning.

PHS Principal Melvin Nusser said the students were vomiting and were sent to the office.

Nusser said Tuesday afternoon it appeared the students were under the influence of drugs or alcohol, but what type of substance had not been determined.

Jones declined to release more details, saying the incident remains under investigation. He said Tuesday afternoon the students had not been interviewed.

Nusser said the school’s discipline policy regarding drugs or alcohol is five days suspension.

If the students are found in possession of any drug, Nusser said the punishment would be a 10-day suspension pending a discipline hearing.
