WT’s Carthel relieved of duties
August 23, 2013
CANYON, Texas — Don Carthel, who coached West Texas A&M to football prominence over the past eight years, was relieved of his duties on Thursday for what it called a violation of NCAA Division II Bylaw 10.1.
WT athletic director Michael McBroom told the Amarillo Globe-News that Carthel violated the rule by “knowingly furnishing or knowingly influencing others to provide false or misleading information in the course of an NCAA investigation.”
McBroom said the violation involved a single incident during the summer.
Carthel, who coached at Eastern New Mexico University from 1985-91 and posted a 44-28-1 record, took over the Buffs’ program in 2005 and had a 79-22 record at the school. His WT squads earned six Division II playoff berths, won five Lone Star Conference championships and played in the D-II Kanza Bowl twice.
Assistant head coach and offensive line coach Mike Nesbitt was elevated to interim head coach.
