Q&A: Texas girl at heart

Growing up in the small town of Farwell, Charla Corn dreamed of making it big in country music.

Since her early beginnings singing at Border Town Days and local county fairs, Corn has toured nationally with the likes of Kevin Fowler, Roger Creager, Pat Green, Aaron Watson and the Josh Abbott Band. She also appeared on Country Music Television as the host of CMT Insider, Wide Open Country and Karaoke Dokie, while living in Nashville.

A Texas girl at heart, Corn now lives in Fort Worth with her husband and daughter and is the co-host of the award-winning morning show of Dallas-Ft. Worth’s 95.9 The Ranch.

She’s also still making music and touring around Texas.

What are your fondest memories of your early start in this area?

I loved growing up there and being able to sing down there on Main Street in Clovis at the Mesa Theater. I did a production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” there, and I also did a production of “Grease” out at Clovis Community College.

I know I grew up in Farwell, but there’s only so much there, so we were always coming into Clovis to get into trouble. That was back when they used to cruise Main, that’s how many years ago it was.

Then there was Border Town Days — I was the reigning Miss Border Town Days in 1997. What I really loved about Border Town Days was Fred Chandler, he was always the country and western act. Singing alongside him was always a treat.

How did your upbringing in this area affect the type of music you wanted to play?

You have to be very truthful with the songs that you write and the music you put out there. People see through anything that’s fake. The people who grew up around you know everything about you, so you can’t hide behind lyrics that don’t speak the truth.

I guess it definitely keeps you grounded and keeps your story as true as possible. You’ve got people that are watching you and recording you and cheering you on as you go out into the world to make something of yourself, and you don’t want to disappoint those people. You always want to do your best.

What’s up next for you?

I’m having the time of my life right now co-hosting a top morning show in the DFW area. I just had a baby girl so I get to be a mama to her, and I’m a newlywed on top of that.

I’m not sure what the Lord has in store for me. I had a record that came out in May, so I’ll be starting to write for the next project this fall.

Any chance you’ll be heading back our direction to perform soon?

I hope so. I performed out there at the Roosevelt County Fair, so maybe they’ll have me again soon. And there’s always the Curry County Fair. I’m in Lubbock a lot at the Blue Light and the Office, that’s probably the closest that I get to home.
