ENMU TRACK, RODEO: Zias win two events in WT meet

CANYON, Texas — Sophomore Alesha Jones and freshman Laura Grube each won events for Eastern New Mexico University's women in Saturday's West Texas A&M Multis track competition.

Jones took first in the 800 with a time of 2:13.28, leading a 1-3-4 Zias finish and good enough to move her into 15th in NCAA Division II rankings. Grube won javelin competition at 134 feet, 5 inches, and also placed fourth in discus and eighth in hammer.

Jones also led off the Zias' 1,600 relay, which finished second with a time of 4:03.41.

The men posted three second-place finishes, including junior Kevin Roa in the 5,000 (15:33.83), freshman Michael Moore in high jump (6-6 1/4) and the 1,600 relay (3:30.12).

Rodeo — At Big Spring, Texas, ENMU's women took first place and the men finished second in an event hosted by Howard College over the weekend.

The Zias compiled 260 team points to 200 for Tarleton State and 170 for Vernon College in the 10-team competition. Meantime, the Greyhounds finished second with 590 points in the 12-team men's division, trailing only Tarleton (970).

ENMU's Kaitlyn Lide was the women's all-around champion in the rodeo. She won goat tying competition to account for 180 of the Zias' points, while junior Gina Flewelling was second for 50 points.

The Zias' other points came from TiAda Gray in breakaway roping.

The men picked up 430 points in team roping. Freshman Cade Passig teamed with Tarleton's Chase Williams for first place, while ENMU junior Logan Medlin and TSU's Billy Bob Brown were second and junior Rodney Garcia and Odessa College's Rodney Garcia placed third.

Also for the Greyhounds, Dora junior Jesse Clark finished first in calf roping, and Fort Sumner senior Christian Pettigrew split seventh and eighth overall in steer wrestling.

ENMU squads close out their spring season this weekend at Tarleton State.
