Fishing report - March 29

This fishing report, provided by Bill Dunn and the Department of Game and Fish, has been generated from the best information available from area officers and anglers. Conditions encountered after the report is compiled may differ, as stream, lake and weather conditions alter fish and angler activities.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Fishing was slow for all species.

Cimarron River: Water flow near Cimarron on Monday was 9.9 cfs. We had no report from anglers.

Clayton Lake: Bad weather kept most anglers away and we had no reports with the exception of the walleye listed in catches of the week.

Conchas Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week. Anglers who wish to do so can still launch boats from the Cannon Cove area but should use extreme caution.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: As of Monday morning about 80 percent of the lake was still iced over but there was some open water to fish from the bank. We had no reports from anglers. For updated conditions contact the State Park office at (575) 377-1594.

Lake Alice: Closed to fishing at this time.

Lake Maloya: There was some open water for bank fishing Sunday but cold overnight temps create a thin layer of ice in the early morning hours. For updated conditions contact the State Park office at (575) 445-5607.

Los Pinos: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: Trout fishing was slow.

Maxwell Lake 13: The water level is down and fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait, salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and Panther Martins.

Morphy Lake: Opens for the season April 1. There will be no boating at this time due to low water levels but bank fishing should be great.

Pecos River: Water flow on Monday near the town of Pecos was 16 cfs. Trout fishing was good using copper John Barrs, prince nymphs and salmon eggs.

Red River: Water flow below the hatchery was 31 cfs. Trout fishing was slow to fair using copper John Barrs and salmon eggs.

Rio Grande: Water flow Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 530 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using wooly buggers and copper John Barrs. We had no reports on other species.

Rio Hondo: Water flow near Valdez on Monday was 11 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Barbara: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using cut bait for northern pike. We had no reports on other species.

Storrie Lake: The latest cold spell has created a thin layer of ice on the lake in the early morning hours but there has been plenty of open water to fish by late morning each day. Fishing was slow for all species with very light fishing pressure.

Stubblefield Lake: Water levels are extremely low and not fishable at this time.

Ute Lake: Fishing was fair using jerk baits, swim baits and jig and grub combinations for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using crank baits and jerk baits for white bass. Fishing was slow for black bass but there were a few taken on jigs, jerk baits and crank baits. The surface water temp was in the upper 40s.

Southeast

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: As of Monday stream flow above Malaga was 1.3cfs. Trout fishing was slow.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

Bonito Lake: Closed.

Bosque Redondo: Fishing was slow to fair using salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and small spoons for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are to practice catch-and-release for all fish here as high levels of DDT were found in several fish.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Trout fishing was fair using Power Bait and salmon eggs.

El Rito Creek: Trout fishing was good using salmon eggs.

Greene Acres Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using Power Bait, Z Rays, Panther Martins, homemade dough bait and salmon eggs.

Green Meadow Lake: Trout fishing was very good using small Daredevles, Panther Martins, Power Bait, worms and salmon eggs. We had no reports on other species.

Grindstone Reservoir: Trout fishing was very good for anglers using salmon eggs and Power Bait. A few fish were also taken by anglers using Z Rays and Panther Martins.

Jal Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, worms and Power Bait for trout.

Lake Van: Trout fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, homemade dough bait, worms and salmon eggs. Anglers using worms also picked up a few catfish. We had no reports on other species.

Oasis Park Lake: Trout fishing was good using Power Bait and homemade dough baits.

Pecos River: Water flow on Monday below Sumner Lake was 83cfs. The west side access has dried out and is now open. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Trout fishing was good using worms, Power Bait, salmon eggs, small Kastmasters, Panther Martins and Pistol Petes.

Ruidoso River: Water flow at Hollywood on Monday was 3.2cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using jigs, grubs, swim baits and nightcrawlers for a mixed bag of walleye and crappie. We had no reports on other species. The lake is closed to boating at this time

Sumner Lake: Fishing pressure was very light and fishing was slow for all species. The east side campground is now open. The Violation Canyon boat ramp remains open at this time and will remain open as long as lake levels permit.
