Hounds cruise past Cameron

March 23, 2013

ORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team continues to excel at home, no matter the weather conditions.

The Greyhounds, who recently endured a nine-game losing streak, have been all but unbeatable at Greyhound Field so far. Despite gusty winds and an eight-run inning by Cameron that momentarily turned a blowout into a somewhat competitive game, ENMU eventually rolled to a 20-10 Lone Star Conference win over the Aggies on Saturday, called in the bottom of the seventh because of the 10-run rule.

The Hounds (14-10, 2-4 LSC) are now 11-1 at home this season.

Originally scheduled to play a pair of seven-inning games on Saturday afternoon, the teams opted to play one nine-inning game on Saturday and move their doubleheader to an 11 a.m. start today to round out the four-game series.

Senior designated hitter Peter Creamer and junior third baseman Colton Sims each had three of the Hounds' 19 hitts off four Aggies hurlers, while five other players had two hits. Sims raised his average for the season to .506 (40-for-79).

Despite all the offense, junior right-hander Ben Monticello (3-2) managed to throw five scoreless innings for the Hounds, leaving with a seemingly safe 15-0 lead.

Cameron roughed up reliever Brian Kennedy and Kyle Kesmarki for eight runs in the top of the sixth, then pullked to 16-10 in the seventh on run-scoring groundouts by Colton Davis and Nick Smith.

The Hounds, though, put up four in the bottom of the seventh. Catcher Jacob Rogers led off with his second home run of the season, while pinch-hitter Sean Gahan singled home a run, center fielder Brooke Brooks hit a sacrifice fly and third baseman Andres Enriquez ended it with a run-scoirng single to left center.

Brandon Raidy, one of four Cameron players with two hits, drove in four runs in the eight-run sixth with a two-run single and a two-run double.
