Class 4A Roswell overpowers Rams

ROSWELL — The Roswell High boys showed why they're the No. 1 team in Class 4A on Friday night.

Senior post Anthony Olguin led four players in double figures with 24 points and the Coyotes got off to a fast start en route to an 80-58 victory over Portales High.

Roswell High (17-2) bolted to a 23-13 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

"I couldn't believe how well Roswell shot in the first half," PHS boys coach Rickie McBroom said. "They just shot extremely well, and a lot of them weren't easy shots.

"Our kids played hard and battled. What else could you ask?"

Junior guard Jarret Faust had a pair of 3-pointers and 13 points for Portales (11-8), while senior post Zach Campbell chipped in 12 points and junior forward Daniel Sanchez added 10.

McBroom said the Rams weren't able to control tempo for stretches of the game, and that's when the Coyotes took off.

"I think we played a little too fast," he said. "We played at their tempo for a little while, and we were rushing some shots. And if you lose your concentration against their press, it's not a good thing."

"We played at a better tempo for us in the second half."

The Rams shot free throws reasonably well. They went 13-for-17 for the game, led by Faust with 5-for-7 and Sanchez with 4-of-4.

"That's the second game in a row we've shot really well from the free-throw line," McBroom said. "And we outrebounded them 30-26, so that was a plus for us."

Junior guard Cesar Nava added 15 points, senior guard Stephen Lucero 11 and senior post Johnnail Lemond 10 for the Coyotes.
