Of note: The Coyotes started the season 13-0 and remain No. 1 in Class 4A despite losses at Class 4A No. 10 Deming (49-43) and Class 5A No. 4 Hobbs (89-83). PHS is ranked fifth in Class 3A. … The Rams, playing their season opener in the earlier meeting, hung with the Coyotes for more than a half, trailing 41-40 with just under six minutes left in the third period. Four Coyotes scored in double figures in that one, led by 5-11 junior G Cesar Nava with 19 points and 6-7 sophomore F Alex Olesiski, who went scoreless in the opening half after drawing three fouls but finished with 13 points. Junior F Daniel Sanchez led the Rams with 14 points, and senior F Zach Blaeser added 11. … Roswell High staked out a 13-0 lead in that game, using its high-pressure defense to force the Rams into eight turnovers on their first 10 possessions. … The only common foe for the teams is Artesia. Portales lost at home to the Bulldogs 58-55, while the Coyotes bludgeoned their District 4-4A rival 86-52 at Roswell.
