Chaps pull away late, beat Hounds

LUBBOCK — Senior guard Jevvon Hunter led four players in double figures with 18 points and freshman guard Jabril Durham flirted with a triple-double Monday night as Lubbock Christian slipped past Eastern New Mexico University 83-76.

The Chaparrals (5-4) also got 15 points and nine rebounds from junior guard Jamaal Crayton, 13 points from freshman guard A.J. Luckey and 10 points eight rebounds and eight assists from Durham in avenging an 87-73 loss to ENMU (3-3) earlier this month at Greyhound Arena.

Junior guard Rodney Blackmon scored 21 points for the Hounds, who saw a four-game winning streak against the Chaps come to an end. Freshman forward Lawrence Domingo had 16 points and seven rebounds while junior guards Kyle Lantz and Rafael Love chipped in 10 points apiece for the Hounds.

ENMU got off to a 6-0 lead on 3-pointers by Lantz and Blackmon and led for nearly 10 minutes before a four-point play by senior guard Tyler Kennedy pulled LCU even 20-20 at the 10:40 mark.

The game seesawed most of the rest of the half, but after two free throws by Blackmon with 3:17 left the Hounds went scoreless the rest of the stanza. A basket by Luckey put the Chaps in front for good, and two baskets by junior forward Eli Baker pushed the margin to 39-34 at halftime.

LCU opened its biggest lead at 73-61 when Kennedy and Hunter capped a 12-2 surge with 3-pointers.

ENMU rallied back, closing to four points twice, but Luckey converted five of six free throws in the final 26 seconds to put the game out of reach.
