Trump committed to wasting time

October 31, 2012

A few weeks ago, Donald Trump said he had a bombshell that had the potential to change the election. Cue the lights, and it was revealed Trump just wanted to offer a $5 million donation to the charity of President Obama's choice, in return for Obama's college and passport records.

The bombshell fizzled. But Trump thinks he has a winner, and he stuck to it on Twitter.

Oct. 26: If my offer is refused, every undecided OH voter will be fully aware that Obama denied $5M to charity all because he is hiding something!

Oct. 26: I want to end the day by saying there is no check I would rather write than that to a good charity designated by our President.

Oct. 29: I'm not hearing much from Obama or his administration about my $5M offer to charity or to which charity the money will go.

I can just see the story now: "Donald Trump died of starvation. Aides said he didn't want his mouth full when President Obama called."

Look, we've been here before. "If President Obama releases his long form birth certificate, all questions will be answered and we'll be totally satisfied." Sound familiar?

It's just moving the goal posts. First it's "long form birth certificate." Next, substitute "college transcripts." Then subsitute "passport applications." Eventually, he'll be asked to turn over his Netflix history. Look, all the president has to do is tell us whether he watched "Gilmore Girls" last week, and this all goes away.

Trump, to his credit, had Trump Tower open for people seeking refuge from the storm.

But being selfless is boring, so he went right back to wielding political attacks on Twitter.

Oct. 30: Hurricane is good luck for Obama again- he will buy the election by handing out billions of dollars.

Oct. 30: Not only giving out money, but Obama will be seen today standing in water and rain like he is a real President --- don't fall for it.

Bad news for you, Donald: Obama is a real president. Whoever's sitting in the Oval Office in January will be a real president too. It's called an election; sorry you fired yourself before the final round.

Oct. 30: Maybe Obama should donate my $5M to the families of the 17 who have lost loved ones during the storm?

Oct. 30: Another great cause Obama could send my $5M donation to is a charity for 9/11 First Responders. They are American heroes.

This brings me to the overarching problem with the "charitable" effort — the strings that are attached. That's not charity; it's a business transaction, or a bribe if you prefer.

Donald Trump could have donated this money by now; heck, he even knows where he'd like it to go. The only thing that's stopping him is his insistence the donation buys him something the Republican bubble has convinced him will embarrass the president.

Vote for Obama, vote for Romney. I'll still talk to you Nov. 7; that's called courtesy. Participate in a blood drive, or send some cash to the Red Cross; that's called charity. Neither one needs a string attached.
