Area prep volleyball - Sept. 29

CAPITAN — In a battle of unbeaten defending state champions, three-time Class 1A champ Tatum got the best of two-time Class B titlist Elida 25-14, 25-8, 25-14 on Saturday in the finals of the Capitan Classic volleyball tournament.

Elida (10-1), which edged Animas in five games in Friday's quarterfinals, reached the title match on Saturday with a 25-21, 20-25, 25-23, 22-25, 15-12 squeaker over Carrizozo, while Tatum defeated Fort Sumner 27-25, 25-14, 25-19. Fort Sumner beat Carrizozo 25-21, 28-26, 25-16 for third place.

The Lady Tigers return to action on Oct. 9 when they host Grady.
